“ITV soap icon faces exit fears following shocking health diagnosis on Emmerdale”

Posted on January 5, 2026

As the worlds of Emmerdale and Coronation Street collided, one soap legend received shocking news.

Emmerdale has delivered a surprise health twist for Cain Dingle.

Played by Jeff Hordley, Cain has been a fixture on the ITV soap for 25 years. The mechanic has been at the heart of countless major storylines and now leads the Dingle clan following the death of his father, Zak (Steve Halliwell).

Cain is also known as a ladies’ man, having had an affair with his cousin, Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins), while in a turbulent marriage with Moira (Natalie J. Robb).

Last year, he was also involved with Ruby, the wife of his brother Caleb Miligan (William Ash), a betrayal that left both families shattered and full of regret.

The affair took place in Cain’s car garage while Moira was undergoing life-saving surgery after being diagnosed with a brain tumour, known as a meningioma.

Cain was also devastated when he learned that his eldest son, Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter), had been killed by local villain John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth).

He even left the village, travelling to France in an attempt to track down John and seek justice for his son’s murder. However, he returned without any new information about the ex-soldier’s whereabouts.

During Monday’s Emmerdale crossover with Coronation Street (January 5), Cain Dingle was once again at the centre of the action as he pursued killer John Sugden.

In a tense moment, John returned to the village after causing a major car crash that left Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) in the passenger seat.

Cain and Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) teamed up with Weatherfield officer Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) to try and apprehend John, but the chase took a shocking turn when Cain was shot by the serial killer.

He was rushed to the hospital for treatment, but it was there that Cain received shocking medical news — he has a brain mass.

Moira sat by her husband’s side as they heard the worrying diagnosis, a heartbreaking echo of her own health struggles from the previous year.

Will Cain be able to fight through his medical condition? Emmerdale viewers will have to tune in to find out.
