Emmerdale: Graham Foster’s life and tragic death explained following his return

Posted on January 6, 2026

Emmerdale viewers were shocked when the mysterious hooded figure lurking around the village was revealed to be former character Graham Foster.

On Monday evening, Emmerdale viewers were left in shock when the mysterious hooded figure appearing in the Corriedale horror scenes was revealed to be Graham Foster — a character thought to have been dead for more than five years.

The New Year began dramatically as the long-anticipated crossover between Coronation Street and Emmerdale finally aired, marking the first-ever collision of the two iconic ITV soaps.

The Corriedale storyline triggered major upheaval for 40 beloved characters across both shows, with two confirmed deaths and intense drama unfolding for many others caught in the turmoil.

In Emmerdale, John Sugden was shown driving dangerously with Aaron Dingle beside him, having returned in a bid to take back his ex-husband from Robert Sugden.

But just as Aaron believed he had convinced John to surrender to the police, catastrophe struck when their vehicle overturned.

This led to a devastating multi-vehicle crash, including a minibus carrying several Coronation Street characters who were returning from Debbie Webster’s wedding in Yorkshire, according to the Manchester Evening News.

As the chaos erupted, a shadowy hooded figure was seen watching the carnage unfold, appearing completely unmoved — even as the minibus was consumed by an explosion.

Meanwhile, an unidentified woman was discovered tied up in the back of a van. She managed to free herself and flee through nearby woodland, only to be stopped by Corrie’s Kit Green as she tried to escape her captor.

Later, amid the turmoil at the hospital, Joe Tate was shown injured and lying in a hospital bed, with the same hooded figure standing guard nearby. It was then that the mysterious onlooker was finally unmasked as Graham Foster.

Who is Graham Foster?

Graham Foster first appeared on Emmerdale in 2017, working as Joe Tate’s loyal right-hand man while Joe was living under the alias Tom Waterhouse. Graham played a key role in helping Joe carry out revenge against those he felt were responsible following the death of his father, Chris Tate.

Over time, Graham became a father-figure to Joe. He had previously been married to both Cheryl Foster and Kim Tate, and also embarked on a romantic relationship with Rhona Goskirk.

Graham later helped Joe flee the country after Cain Dingle attacked him, leaving Cain believing he had killed Joe during their violent encounter. Although Graham’s relationship with Kim Tate reignited after her release from prison, it eventually fell apart, leading him to start a new romance with Rhona.

However, his life came to a brutal end when Pierce Harris — Rhona Goskirk’s former husband and rapist — attacked him with a torch during a confrontation that resulted in Graham falling from a cliff. His apparent death sparked a lengthy “whodunnit” storyline, as Graham had made many enemies in the village in the lead-up to the incident.

A later flashback episode revealed Graham’s account of the events of that night, suggesting Pierce was responsible for killing him — a version of events viewers have accepted for the past six years. Last seen in the Dales in 2020, actor Andrew Scarborough has since appeared in the ITV drama Code of Silence, but now appears set for an unexpected comeback.
