EastEnders teases a fresh romance for two Walford residents after the New Year’s Day flashforward.
EastEnders has suggested a potential new romance for Penny Branning, while mystery continues to surround newcomer Ethan.
The BBC One soap pulled out all the stops in its much-anticipated New Year’s Day 2026 episode, which offered viewers a teasing glimpse of dramatic events set to unfold on the same date in 2027.
The episode focused on Max Branning (Jake Wood) as he prepared for his fifth wedding, alongside several intriguing twists — including the introduction of a baby boy.
One of the biggest mysteries in the flashforward was the arrival of a baby named Ethan, who is living at Jack Branning’s home. Jack (Scott Maslen) appeared to be struggling to cope with the demands of caring for the infant.
At first glance, it would be easy to assume that baby Ethan is Jack’s son. However, none of Jack’s children appeared in the episode — including Penny Branning (Kitty Castledine), Amy Mitchell (Ellie Dadd) and Ricky Branning (Frankie Day) — raising questions over Ethan’s true identity. This has led to speculation that Ethan could instead be Jack’s grandchild.
Oscar Branning (Pierre Counihan-Moullier) also revealed that Max had once saved the lives of both his grandson Jimmy Beale and baby Ethan. How this happened, or why the two babies were ever in danger, remains unclear, according to OK!.
That revelation alone was enough to prompt Jack to step in and help his older brother, suggesting that Walford’s youngest residents are facing serious danger as 2026 unfolds.
In upcoming EastEnders episodes airing from Monday (January 12), Penny seems to have taken a liking to a local lad after they were seen sharing a Christmas kiss.
Gina Knight (Francesca Henry) is the first to notice that Penny appears smitten with Vinny Panesar (Shiv Jalota) and encourages her to make a move.
Adding another layer, Gina points out that Penny and Vinny have previously shared a one-night stand, hinting that they might consider exploring a romantic relationship. By the end of the week, Penny and Vinny are seen on a date at Container Junction — could this mark the start of a new romance?
Since returning to Walford two years ago, Penny had a brief romance with Harry Mitchell (Eljiha Holloway). However, the tragic death of his ex-partner, Shireen, created tension between them, preventing their relationship from developing.
Meanwhile, across the Square, the ever-unlucky-in-love Vinny was previously involved with Dotty Cotton, only to be cruelly dumped.
