Christopher Harper, star of Call the Midwife, has revealed that it’s a relief to portray a kind character on the BBC drama following his role as an abuser on Coronation Street.

Christopher Harper is enjoying the chance to have fun on Call the Midwife after years of playing a villain on Coronation Street.
The actor now portrays the lovable Geoffrey Franklin, a role that is a world apart from his time as paedophile Nathan Curtis on Corrie from 2016 to 2024.
Reflecting on his experience, Christopher said: “The biggest thing about the Corrie storyline was that people who had been sexually abused—or had family members who had been—would often approach me. I’d be in Lidl, and someone would share their story. It was a huge privilege, but sometimes you just want to grab some sausage rolls and get out. Now, playing Geoffrey on Call the Midwife, it’s a completely different experience.”

“I get people coming up to me saying they’ve seen Geoffrey on the show and expect me to be just as kind. That’s so much more fun,” Christopher said.
He’s been part of Call the Midwife for three years and is loving every moment.
“I absolutely adore playing Geoffrey. It’s such a joy. He has this wonderful way of truly listening to people and understanding them.
“This series, he has a storyline that’s really heartfelt, and I know it’s going to touch people’s hearts.”

Co-star Helen George is equally excited to be part of the show.
The actress, who plays Geoffrey’s sister Trixie, said: “It feels really special to have been here from the very beginning, and there are only a few of us left who can say that.
“Reaching 15 series has been an incredible journey for me. Watching Trixie’s storylines evolve and seeing the show grow in popularity—not just here, but internationally—has been amazing to witness.
“It’s something I could only have dreamed of, and I’m so proud of everything we’ve accomplished so far.”
