Coronation Street’s Leanne Battersby made a surprise confession on Friday
Coronation Street viewers were left “in tears” on Friday (January 16) as a much-loved character made a surprise revelation about her future on the cobbles. In the latest episode of the ITV soap, now available to stream on ITVX, Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) and her sister Eva Price (Catherine Tyldesley) rallied around newcomer Megan Walsh (Beth Nixon) after she discovered she was pregnant.
Megan had decided to book a termination, admitting she didn’t feel prepared for motherhood. When questioned about the baby’s father, she confirmed it was Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard), despite her recent inappropriate behaviour towards Eva’s stepson, Will Driscoll (Lucas Hodgson-Wale).
Later, Leanne accompanied Megan to her appointment, where Megan opened up about her fears that this could be her final chance to have a child, having previously been told she may not be able to conceive due to polycystic ovary syndrome.
Leanne offered comfort by sharing her own painful past, reflecting on the loss of her son Oliver (Toby Catley), who tragically died from a life-limiting mitochondrial disease in 2020, providing heartfelt support during the emotional moment.

The emotionally charged day prompted Leanne to reflect on her life on the cobbles and the deep sense of loneliness she was feeling. Opening up to Eva, she admitted that the events had made her question everything.
She told her sister that the day had forced her to take a long, hard look at her own situation, wondering why she was still in Weatherfield, working in a curry house and staring out at the familiar rain-soaked streets.
When Eva suggested renting out her spare room to ease the loneliness, Leanne dismissed the idea, explaining that she felt the need to escape altogether. She said that travelling and seeing the world, like Eva had done, might help, but admitted a simple holiday wouldn’t fix what was going on in her head. Instead, she revealed plans to sell her share of Speed Daal and make a fresh start somewhere warm, free from painful memories and emotional baggage.
Unwilling to lose her sister, Eva quickly proposed another idea, suggesting Leanne buy out her bitter mother-in-law Maggie (Pauline McLynn) and that the two of them run the Rovers together. Leanne considered the suggestion, admitting it was appealing, while Eva insisted that the pair managing the iconic pub would be a dream come true.

Coronation Street viewers were left stunned after the episode aired, with fans quickly taking to X (formerly Twitter) to share their emotional reactions. One viewer wrote: “Leanne talking about leaving the street! YOU BETTER NOT — I can’t do this without you!”
Another added: “My dreams are shattered. Leanne, this does not mean you’re allowed to leave Weatherfield! Corrie, please give my woman a proper storyline,” while a third fan admitted: “I’m genuinely in tears. Leanne better not be going anywhere.”
Eva’s suggestion could indicate that Leanne isn’t planning to leave the cobbles anytime soon, but questions remain over whether Maggie will agree to being bought out. The storyline follows months after Leanne actress Jane Danson reassured fans that she had not been written out of the soap amid swirling exit rumours.
Addressing the speculation on social media in October 2025, Jane hit back at the claims, explaining that reports had falsely suggested she’d been axed and had even written an emotional letter about it. She pointed out that if she had been let go, she would have been informed, adding that after nearly 30 years of people inventing stories, she had finally reached her limit with what she described as complete nonsense.
