Coronation Street departure looks likely as star secures new job away from the cobbles

Posted on January 18, 2026

A Coronation Street star has shared a major career update, sparking fears they could be leaving the cobbles

A Coronation Street favourite has shared a major career update, prompting fans to worry it could signal an exit from the cobbles.

Summer Spellman first appeared on the ITV soap in 2017, originally played by Matilda Freeman. As the adopted daughter of Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) and Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce), the character has been at the heart of several major storylines over the years.

Now portrayed by Harriet Bibby, Summer has been left devastated in recent weeks following Billy’s tragic death. The vicar was killed during the dramatic multi-vehicle crash in the Corriedale crossover episode, which was initially believed to be caused by Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) before it was revealed that Carl (Jonathan Howard) was responsible.

In the aftermath of his death, a devastated Summer has struggled to come to terms with losing her father. Unable to accept Billy’s passing, she has been visibly consumed by grief. This week, her anguish boiled over when she slapped Debbie, blaming her for Billy’s death, Mirror reports.

Away from the drama on screen, actress Harriet has shared some exciting career news with her followers. In a post on Instagram last Friday (January 16), she revealed that she will be appearing in the critically acclaimed play My Name Is Rachel Corrie.

The production is based entirely on the personal diaries and letters of a young American peace activist, with Take Back Theatre and 53Two acting as co-producers. Harriet shared on Instagram: “We’ve been working on something beautiful! @ijkershaw @takebacktheatre @53two @reddoormanagement. Ticket link in bio.”

Her co-stars were quick to show their support in the comments. Georgia Taylor, who plays Toyah Habeeb, wrote: “So excited for this, my darling.”

Jane Hazlegrove, known for her role as Bernie Winger, added: “Now then… this will be fabulous…”

Following the announcement of Harriet’s new project, fans have begun speculating that she could be leaving Coronation Street. On a Facebook post about her career update, one viewer asked: “Is she leaving Corrie?”

Another fan commented: “Hope she’s not leaving, I’ll miss her. I really like her character. Best of luck for the future.” A third added: “Don’t want to see her go! Love Summer.”
