EastEnders’ Jack Ryder opens up about the real reason behind Jamie Mitchell’s departure after 23 years

Posted on January 19, 2026

Jack Ryder, famous for his role as Jamie Mitchell in EastEnders, has shared details about his emotional departure from the soap and whether he would consider returning to the BBC drama.

EastEnders fans were left heartbroken on Christmas Day 2002 when Jamie Mitchell was tragically killed after being hit by Martin Fowler.
The beloved soap star died from internal injuries, with his partner Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) by his side in the hospital.
Jamie had been outside the tube station when Martin’s (James Alexandrou) car struck him as he attempted to surprise Sonia with flowers and a ring.
The emotional episode drew around 16 million viewers and is still remembered as one of EastEnders’ most iconic exits.
Speaking to new online bingo site Zingo Bingo about his final scenes, Jack Ryder recalled: “Those memories are a little hazy now, a bit blurred, but I do remember being in a hospital bed.”

“I remember the entire storyline—Jamie’s death, and of course, the Christmas Day episode. There were so many factors tied up in Jamie’s exit, and filming those scenes was an emotional mix for me.

“The choice to leave the show was mine, but the decision for Jamie’s death wasn’t.

“I wanted to step away for a while, but the producers couldn’t find a convincing way for him to just leave Sonia and vanish. At that point, I truly needed a break from that chapter of my life.”

“The pressure of being on a soap—the long filming hours and the intensity of fame—felt quite overwhelming.

“At the same time, saying goodbye to people like Steve McFadden [Phil Mitchell] and Natalie Cassidy was genuinely sad. They were colleagues I’d worked closely with for years, but I also felt ready to move on.

“Once you make a decision like that, you begin to transition, and it’s worth noting that I stayed on the show for another year after deciding to leave.

“It wasn’t a sudden departure—the storyline had been developing for a long time.”

Jack now enjoys a quieter life in the countryside but says he might consider returning to a soap “if the storyline felt right.”
He added: “I’m older now, and I look back on my time in EastEnders with fond memories.

“It taught me a lot, and creatively, I’m much more open these days. I’d be willing to return if the story made sense—I’m open to exploring creative opportunities.”
