Not long ago, Sonny (Maurice Benard) was the mobster we loved and feared—hanging Dex Heller (Evan Hofer) from a meat hook and beating him at his niece’s wedding. That violent, fiery version of Sonny seems different now. Recently, when Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn) tried to shift the blame for Drew Cain’s (Cameron Mathison) shooting from Willow to Michael Corinthos (Rory Gibson), viewers expected a meltdown. Yet, when Sonny confronted Alexis in her office, he stayed calm, speaking to her logically without yelling, screaming, or threatening her. Given his legendary temper—especially when it comes to protecting his family—his composure was surprising.
Sonny Showing Grace Toward Willow Despite Her Betrayal
Sonny has always despised Drew, which is understandable, but his attitude toward Willow is more unexpected. Could Sonny’s gentler demeanor be part of a plan to protect his son or manage the situation? Normally, his temper flares when he isn’t on his medication, suggesting he is taking it—but this version of Sonny is noticeably softer than ever (except for his time as Mike in Nixon Falls).
His calmness could simply be a result of age or a growing weariness of the mob lifestyle—a feeling he’s expressed before. Or, perhaps this is just the calm before the storm.
