“EastEnders fans have voiced their disappointment over the way Sam Mitchell’s breast cancer storyline is being portrayed.”

EastEnders has introduced a gripping new storyline as Sam Mitchell discovers a lump in her breast, leaving her terrified.
The younger sister of Walford’s tough guy Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), Sam (Kim Medcalf) is best known for her sharp tongue and scheming ways.
She returned to Albert Square in December, immediately raising questions while hiding a deeply troubling secret.
It was later revealed that Sam had discovered the lump but was too afraid to see a doctor, haunted by memories of her mother Peggy’s (Barbara Windsor) own battle with breast cancer.

After Phil encouraged her to seek medical advice, Sam was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer and told she would need a lumpectomy.
In Tuesday’s episode of the BBC One drama (January 20), Ricky Branning (Frankie Day) organised a surprise birthday party for Phil, following Raymond’s suggestion.
However, the celebrations were overshadowed when Ricky became suspicious that his mother, Sam, was planning another sudden departure from Walford.
In reality, Sam had a medical appointment to prepare for her upcoming surgery and had not yet shared her breast cancer diagnosis with her son, according to OK! magazine.

George Knight (Colin Salmon) found Sam sitting alone in the Square’s gardens, holding a letter about her lumpectomy, and encouraged her to be honest with Ricky.
Following George’s supportive advice, Sam returned home and finally shared her breast cancer diagnosis and upcoming surgery with Ricky, who vowed to stand by her.
EastEnders viewers have voiced frustration that Sam’s cancer storyline has not been given sufficient focus on-screen, particularly her hospital visits and emotional journey, which would make the portrayal of the illness more realistic.
On X, one fan commented: “The show made a big deal about Sam returning, but her story is mostly happening off-screen. How do you fumble a relatable social issue storyline like this? #EastEnders.”

Another viewer said: “I wish they’d focus more on Sam. What’s the point of giving Kim Medcalf this cancer storyline if most of her scenes happen off-screen? #EastEnders.”
A third fan added: “It’s such a shame—they’ve done Sam’s cancer plot but barely show her at the hospital with her family. #EastEnders.”
One disappointed viewer wrote: “Why bring Sam back and announce a breast cancer storyline if everything happens off-screen? What’s the point? #EastEnders.”
Another remarked: “It’s crazy—they spoiled Sam’s return and storyline but aren’t actually showing any of it. #EastEnders.”
Kim Medcalf appeared to hint at the future of her beloved character during a recent interview on The One Show. While discussing her current soap storyline, she revealed that Sam will have a “positive outcome” from her cancer treatment, suggesting the character won’t be leaving EastEnders.
Speaking to hosts Lauren Laverne and Roman Kemp, Kim explained: “The big thing is that Sam returns from Spain and discovers a lump.”

“Her mum passed away from breast cancer, and Sam just thought, ‘That’s it, game over, I don’t want to face it, it’s inevitable.’
“But the people around her encourage her to get it checked, and when she does, it turns out to be breast cancer. She undergoes a lumpectomy, and it has a positive outcome.”
She added, “I think just raising awareness through this story feels like a really meaningful thing to be involved in.”
