Ex-Emmerdale actor Adam Thomas has spoken out about his ongoing battle with rheumatoid arthritis, disclosing that the intense pain has flared up again.

Former Emmerdale star Adam Thomas has shared an honest health update amid his ongoing struggle with debilitating arthritis. The 37-year-old revealed he is enduring “severe pain” and described experiencing a recent “big wake-up call.”
Adam was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, a condition affecting the joints, in 2023, just prior to his appearance on Strictly Come Dancing.
The actor, who first rose to fame on the ITV soap in 2009, has now spoken about a concerning development in his health. He admitted that he had become “complacent” with his treatment over the holiday period, which led to the resurgence of intense pain.
Alongside his update, Adam posted a photo of himself injecting arthritis medication into his leg and shared a video on his Stories expressing worries about possibly developing immunity to the treatment.
He wrote: “Stop thinking you’re invincible, because you’re not. Over the last few days, I’ve felt it creeping back—the pain in my wrists, my fingers, and even the psoriasis returning,” reports OK!
Adam admitted: “Over Christmas, I became complacent, skipped my injections, thinking it would be fine! How wrong I was. Just a few days ago, I had a real wake-up call.
“I woke up in the middle of the night with intense pain in my wrists, and in that moment, I was transported back to that scared little boy I once was, living with pain and fear.
“Don’t get me wrong, the pain has eased a little since—maybe I slept on it awkwardly, I’m not sure—but I know I’m not pain-free anymore! Something has changed… the medications I’m on, your body can adapt to them, skip doses, and then they might stop working entirely. That thought terrifies me!”

“I’m hoping it’s just because I missed my doses and need to get back into routine. The truth is… I got too comfortable, got a bit lazy, thought I’d beaten it, but I was wrong… it’s still there.
“I can feel it, lingering… Honestly, I don’t think you ever truly beat it, you just learn to live with it, to control it! This is a message to myself, and anyone else who needs to hear it: don’t get complacent, don’t slack off, don’t think you’re invincible.
“I need to start looking after my body properly again! Yes, I’m enjoying my training right now, but maybe I need to ease up a bit and really focus on listening to my body. Stay consistent, Adam x, and take care of yourself x.”
After receiving a flood of supportive messages from fans facing similar arthritis struggles, Adam shared a series of videos on his Instagram Stories.

During a prior interview on Good Morning Britain last year, Adam spoke candidly about the challenges of his condition. While on the GMB sofa, Susanna remarked: “We’re joking about you becoming a P.E. teacher, but this actually limits your movement, doesn’t it?”
Adam replied, “Yes, absolutely. I’ve been dealing with this autoimmune disease for about two and a half years now.
“It’s been really tough. I’m not exaggerating when I say that every single day over the past two and a half years has involved pain.
“It’s been a struggle, but I feel like I’ve finally found some stability – after trying so many different medications and treatments, and going back and forth between doctors and hospitals.”
