Coronation Street reveals Cassie’s tragic exit storyline following Claire Sweeney’s departure

Posted on January 30, 2026

Coronation Street star Claire Sweeney is set to exit as Cassie Plummer, with fans discovering the heartbreaking details of her departure

Coronation Street fans are convinced they know how Cassie Plummer will exit the soap following the announcement that Claire Sweeney is leaving.

Cassie first appeared on the cobbles in 2023 as the estranged mother of Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall), and it didn’t take long for her to stir up drama.

In 2024, viewers were shocked when Cassie began poisoning Ken Barlow (Will Roache). The two had formed an unlikely friendship while Ken was being cared for after a fall.

After Ken nearly suffered a fatal heart attack, the truth came to light, but he ultimately forgave Cassie — much to the dismay of his daughter, Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford).

Since then, Cassie seems to have turned a new leaf and has begun a relationship with Tracy’s ex, Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson), which has not gone down well with Tracy.

However, this week it was revealed that Claire Sweeney is leaving the soap and will depart the cobbles this summer. Her exit comes as she prepares to take on the role of Miss Hannigan in the upcoming Annie tour.

The news of Claire’s departure has left many fans devastated, but speculation is already rife about how Cassie might exit the Street — with some fearing a shocking murder storyline.

On a Coronation Street Facebook fan page, reacting to Claire leaving the soap, one person commented: “Such a shame, I really liked her — she was an amazing actress.” Another added: “I have a feeling they might kill her character off.”

A third user wrote: “I think the same.” Someone else suggested that Tracy could be responsible for Cassie’s possible murder, saying: “As much as I like Cassie, a dramatic exit could work, maybe Tracy kills her?” A fifth fan replied: “Definitely Tracy!”

A Coronation Street spokesperson confirmed Claire’s departure this week, saying: “We wish Claire all the best in her role as Miss Hannigan and congratulate her on landing a part she has long hoped to play.”

They added: “Cassie will remain on the cobbles until the summer, continuing to make an impact in Weatherfield before her exit is brought to a dramatic conclusion.”
