“Fan-favourite Coronation Street actor shares upsetting update four years post-exit”

Posted on January 30, 2026

“Former Coronation Street cast member Melanie Hill appeared on ITV’s Lorraine on Friday to share news.”

A Coronation Street favourite has revealed a disappointing update, four years after leaving the show.

Actress Melanie Hill is best known for her role as Cathy Matthews on the popular ITV soap. Cathy was a regular on the cobbles from April 2015 until June 2022.

During her time in Weatherfield, Cathy struggled with compulsive hoarding following the death of her husband, and received support from Corrie stalwart Roy Cropper (David Neilson). The pair eventually entered a relationship and were set to marry in 2016, but Roy called off the wedding at the last minute, still grieving the loss of his late wife Hayley (Julie Hesmondhalgh).

In 2017, Cathy began a romance with Brian Packham (Peter Gunn), and the couple later moved into 12 Coronation Street together with Cathy’s nephew, Alex Warner (Liam Bairstow). In 2019, Cathy and Brian purchased The Kabin from Norris Cole (Malcolm Hebden).

Three years later, growing increasingly unhappy in her relationship with Brian, Cathy left the Street to move in with a friend in Chorlton and hasn’t been seen since.

Melanie Hill, who played Cathy, appeared on ITV’s Lorraine on Friday (January 30) and gave a disappointing update about the possibility of returning to the cobbles.

Host Lorraine Kelly said: “You were on such a hugely successful, long-running show, Corrie, when you were with Roy. How much do we love Roy? Ray and David, the actor who plays him — such a lovely character.

“Of course, you weren’t officially written out, so the door is still open for something like that.”

Hinting that a return is unlikely, Melanie responded: “I think my last scene had me leaving in a taxi to Chorlton. I’m happy where I am now on Casualty.”

The 64-year-old actress currently stars as Clinical Nurse Manager Siobhan McKenzie in the BBC medical drama Casualty, a role she took on in 2024.

Fans were left devastated after a shocking cliffhanger aired last weekend (January 24), showing the beloved character being attacked while walking home from work.

Speaking about the intense storyline on today’s Lorraine, Melanie said: “I think it’s a story that needs to be told because bad things can happen to people of all ages, men and women alike. Showing the aftermath through an older character is an important perspective.”

She added: “The positive thing is that we haven’t sensationalised it. It happens very quickly, and the focus is on the real medical consequences she faces afterwards — that’s the story we want to tell as a medical drama.”
