Emmerdale’s Andrew Scarborough speaks in real life — and it’s nothing like Graham Foster

Posted on February 3, 2026

Emmerdale’s Graham Foster is famous for his deep, smooth voice, but actor Andrew Scarborough sounds very different off-screen.

Emmerdale’s Graham Foster is well-known for his smooth baritone voice, but off-screen, actor Andrew Scarborough sounds very different.

Scarborough first joined the ITV soap nearly a decade ago, in 2017, as Graham Foster, a character who quickly caused trouble in the Dales.

By 2020, viewers believed Graham had met his demise at the hands of Pierce Harris (Jonathan Wrather), the violent ex-husband of Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry), with whom Graham had recently been romantically involved.

However, a dramatic episode aired this past January revealed that Graham had actually survived and had been lying low for several years.

When Graham returned to the village, he was met with a frosty reception from locals, including former flame Kim Tate (Claire King), Rhona, and Joe Tate (Ned Porteous), whom Graham had raised as both guardian and father figure, according to the Mirror.

Although initially taken aback, Joe eventually warmed to Graham and offered him a place to stay at Home Farm. Wanting to keep the peace, Kim allowed Graham back onto the farm, knowing it would make Joe happy.

Graham’s dramatic return has delighted countless viewers, many of whom have been captivated by the character and his signature velvety voice. “I love Graham and his sexy voice,” one fan gushed, while another added: “Graham with that voice though [heart eyes emoji].”

However, off-screen, actor Andrew — who hails from Harrogate — sounds completely different.

During a 2018 interview on ITV’s Lorraine, Andrew spoke about the soap and revealed his real voice, which features a distinct Northern accent, a stark contrast to his Emmerdale character.

Speaking about Graham’s shocking comeback and return to the Dales, Andrew admitted: “I never expected it at all. Although, saying that, I did feel there was always a chance Graham could come back.”

On keeping his dramatic return under wraps, the 52-year-old actor confessed: “Oh yes, it was a big secret, and I mostly kept it quiet from my family, which was tricky.”

He went on to explain who he had told: “Yes, just a very limited few. In fact, some of my cousins contacted me after it aired, saying, ‘You sod!’”
