Debbie Webster is one of Coronation Street’s most popular characters — but how old is she?
Debbie, played by Sue Devaney, first appeared on the cobbles back in 1984 as the sister of Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell). She exited the show a year later, before making her return to Weatherfield in 2019.
Since then, Debbie has firmly established herself as a fan favourite. However, the savvy businesswoman has endured a particularly tough year on the street.
In addition to being diagnosed with young-onset vascular dementia, Debbie was also caught up in the dramatic multi-vehicle crash during the Corrie anniversary episodes in January — a storyline that resulted in the death of Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank).
The crash was initially believed to have been caused by Debbie, but the truth later emerged that her brother Carl (Jonathan Howard) was actually responsible. After the collision, Carl moved an unconscious Debbie into the driver’s seat, making it appear as though she had been behind the wheel.
Debbie later appeared in court after being charged with causing the multi-vehicle pile-up and stunned her family by pleading guilty. However, in a dramatic twist, it was revealed that Debbie was taking the blame to protect Carl — because she is secretly his biological mother
This week, the truth was finally revealed when a guilt-stricken Carl admitted he was planning to go to the police and confess that he had been the one driving the car. However, Debbie stopped him and dropped a bombshell of her own — revealing that she is his mother — leaving Carl shocked and angry.
As the secret son storyline continues to unfold on screen, fans may be wondering about Debbie’s age. Debbie was born on 7 September 1968, making her 57, while actress Sue Devaney was born on 2 July 1967 and is 58.
Meanwhile, Carl is 39, having been born on 15 December 1986. Actor Jonathan Howard, who plays him, was born on 17 November 1984 and is now 41.
Meanwhile, Sue recently spoke out about the secret child storyline, explaining: “This happened a long time ago, when she [Debbie] gave birth to him and then watched him grow up, seeing his dad and Elaine raise him. I think, in her mind, she convinced herself, ‘Yes, he’s my brother.’
“It’s the story you tell yourself. She believed he was being brought up well. At the time, she was only 16 or 17 and couldn’t care for him. It’s only when she’s told that her life has an ending — and he’s still part of her world — that it brings back so many old memories.
“The truth has to come out now. I think she was prepared to take the blame because she feels such deep guilt. She feels guilty because Carl has had such a difficult life.”
