Coronation Street fans ‘pick up on’ clue that could spare Debbie a prison sentence

Posted on February 7, 2026

Debbie Webster was handed a two-year-and-eight-month prison sentence on Friday in Coronation Street

Coronation Street fans think they’ve uncovered a major clue that could help save Debbie Webster following her prison sentence.

Debbie (Sue Devaney) first arrived on the cobbles in 1984 as the sister of Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell). She left Weatherfield a year later before making her return in 2019.

The much-loved character has endured a difficult year. Alongside being diagnosed with early-onset vascular dementia, Debbie was caught up in last month’s devastating multi-vehicle crash during the Corriedale crossover. The tragedy resulted in the death of Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank).

While the crash was initially believed to have been caused by Debbie, it later emerged that her brother Carl (Jonathan Howard) had been driving while under the influence. In the aftermath of the collision, Carl moved an unconscious Debbie into the driver’s seat in an attempt to frame her.

After noticing bruising on the left side of her body, Debbie realised she had been sitting in the passenger seat. However, she chose to protect Carl and keep quiet, as he is her secret son.

Earlier this week, a guilt-ridden Carl made the decision to tell the police the truth, but quickly changed his mind after Debbie revealed she was his mother. Heartbroken that she had lied to him throughout his life, Carl made it clear he wanted nothing further to do with her.

In Friday’s episode (February 6), now available to stream on ITVX, Debbie sought out Carl ahead of her court appearance and told him how much it would mean to her if he attended her sentencing.

When Debbie later appeared in court, she was relieved to see her husband Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan), her brother Kevin, sister-in-law Abi (Sally Carman), and employee Ryan Connor (Ryan Prescott) there to support her. However, Carl was noticeably absent, leaving Debbie deeply disappointed.

The judge then confirmed that Debbie would receive a four-year prison sentence, which was reduced to two years and eight months due to her guilty plea. The much-loved character was immediately taken into custody as her devastated family and friends looked on.

The drama intensified shortly afterwards when Ronnie received a call from the prison informing him that Debbie had suffered another TIA — a temporary interruption of blood flow to the brain.

After being rushed to hospital, Debbie was left in tears when she realised she had been handcuffed to her bed on the ward.

Now, several Coronation Street fans think they’ve figured out how Debbie could be freed from prison — and believe her husband Ronnie may hold the answer.

“I hope Ronnie notices Debbie’s bruising and realises she was sitting in the passenger seat. I can’t bear the thought of her being in prison,” one viewer wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Another added: “Free our Debbie!!”

A third fan commented: “I’m still confused by #Corrie — Billy’s van overturned while avoiding Becky and Lisa’s crash, and Carl and Debbie’s collision happened afterwards. Why is Billy’s death being blamed on Debbie? If the police had access to Carl and Debbie’s medical reports, they should also have noticed the seatbelt bruising.”

Echoing those concerns, another viewer wrote: “Ronnie needs to get Carl to tell the truth. Debbie won’t survive prison.”
