Emmerdale welcomes back ‘missing’ star in dramatic Christmas Day episode

Posted on December 25, 2025

Emmerdale’s Christmas Day was anything but merry as villain John Sugden returned to the village in a bid to reclaim Aaron Dingle.

Chaos erupted in Emmerdale village on Christmas Day.

Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) grew worried when Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) left on a mysterious errand during Thursday’s (December 25) hour-long festive episode, now available to stream on ITVX.

Robert’s sudden absence came after Aaron’s car windscreen was smashed and trees outside their home were set on fire, leaving the couple paranoid that Robert’s ex-husband, Kev Townsend (Chris Coghill), was seeking revenge.

Aaron and Robert initially believed Kev was trying to sabotage their relationship, but this turned out not to be the case. As the day went on, Aaron and Victoria Sugden (Isobel Hodgins) grew increasingly concerned for Robert’s safety, though he eventually returned to the village.

Elsewhere, Kev was shown battered and bruised, being held against his will.

As a shadowy figure entered the dark room with a torch, Kev demanded: “Oh come on then, who are you and why have you done this? Have you lost your tongue, yeah?”

After a pause, he continued: “Oh wait, no, that’s right — not right now, you haven’t, because I’m going to cut it off, and that’s just the beginning.”

The mysterious figure was later revealed to be John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth), Aaron’s ex-husband, who replied: “That’s a big threat coming from a man in your very precarious position.”

Kev admitted he knew exactly who John was, calling him “Jonny Psycho”, while John revealed his sinister plan to win Aaron back and ensure Kev and Robert disappear for good.

Fans know that John is extremely dangerous, having killed Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter), left Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) for dead, and thrown Aaron, the love of his life, off a cliff.

Earlier this year, Emmerdale viewers saw John evade justice by using his knowledge of Anthony Fox’s (Nicholas Day) murder to blackmail Caleb Miligan (William Ash) into helping him escape the village back in September.

Sharp-eyed fans have also noticed John appearing on wanted posters at Coronation Street’s Weatherfield police station, ahead of the upcoming Corriedale crossover episode airing next month.
