Coronation Street legend Charlie Lawson has spoken out following reports that his character Jim McDonald is set to be killed off

Coronation Street legend Charlie Lawson has spoken out following reports that his character, Jim McDonald, is set to be killed off the ITV soap.

It was reported on Tuesday that Jim — portrayed by Charlie, 66, from 1989 until 2018 — will reportedly be written out next month.

Jim’s son Steve McDonald, played by Simon Gregson, is said to be left torn after receiving a phone call informing him of his father’s death, given their long-running and often strained relationship.

Addressing the reports, Charlie took to social media platform X, formerly Twitter, to share his reaction.

Replying to a fan, he wrote: “I’ve known since early September, but I’ve always respected the programme’s confidentiality. It wasn’t a surprise when I was informed last year.”

Jim was last seen on the cobbles in 2018, when he walked free after conning his ex-wife Liz McDonald, played by Beverley Callard.

Viewers will remember that Jim was involved in a number of major storylines over the years, including being left temporarily paralysed after falling from scaffolding during a confrontation with Steve.

Other notable plots saw Jim sentenced to up to eight years in prison for the manslaughter of drug dealer Jez Quigley, who had attacked Steve, as well as his later return to jail following an armed robbery.

Speaking to RadioTimes, a source revealed: “Jim’s death will rock the boat for hapless Steve, who has finally found happiness with Cassie Plummer.”

The publication reports that Liz, last seen on the cobbles in 2020, is not expected to return for the storyline. Coronation Street declined to comment when contacted by Daily Star.

Meanwhile, Cassie actress Claire Sweeney has announced her departure from the ITV soap, with her final scenes set to air this summer, bringing even more heartbreak for Steve.

The 54-year-old has secured a role in the UK and Ireland touring production of Annie, where she will take on the iconic character of Miss Hannigan.
