“Coronation Street boss promises to keep one key element at the heart of the soap despite explosive storylines”

Posted on January 16, 2026

The Rovers Return, Britain’s iconic pub, will continue to play a central role in Coronation Street’s ever-more explosive plots, the show’s bosses have promised.

Britain’s most famous pub, the Rovers Return, will remain at the heart of Coronation Street’s increasingly explosive storylines, the soap’s bosses have confirmed.

Producers of the ITV series also say they plan to preserve the show’s humour and sense of community, even as recent plots have been dominated by a string of murders.

Speaking about the long-running series’ willingness to experiment with the soap format, boss Kate Brookes said: “We do have episodes that feel special and different, and that break the usual formula in interesting ways. I think they’re a really engaging way of telling a story. We produce a lot of episodes each year, and we still include plenty of traditional-format episodes to satisfy our more classic viewers.”

“I think when a story allows it, or lends itself to a more abstract or slightly unconventional approach, we embrace it — and we do it really well,” Kate Brookes explained.

She added that producers “never” plan to lose the core “DNA of what makes Corrie brilliant.”

“That’s our strong women, which we have in abundance, our humour, our grit, our friendships, our sense of community, and of course the pub at the heart of the street,” she said. “We’re never going to lose that, but we can push boundaries and tell stories that are relatable to real life, in ways that make viewers stop and think, ‘OK, that’s made me see this in a whole new light.’”

The Rovers Return has faced numerous fires and attacks throughout Coronation Street’s long-running history, which began on December 9, 1960. The show has also seen major changes over the past year, including a return to 30-minute episodes from January and several special instalments. Among them was Behind Closed Doors, which explored the domestic abuse suffered by Todd Grimshaw.

Coronation Street recently teamed up with Emmerdale for the first-ever CorrieDale crossover, bringing together residents of Weatherfield and Emmerdale. The gamble paid off, with fans thrilled by both the hour-long joint episode and the individual instalments of each show.

Across the series, viewers witnessed three killings, a cancer diagnosis, a shooting, a hint of a fake identity, the arrival of a shady newcomer, and the shocking return of Graham Foster. Graham had been killed in Emmerdale in 2020 by Pierce Harris, with his body left to rot in woodland as part of a whodunnit plot.

Kate Brookes said: “That’s what we’ll continue to do moving forward — take these big stories and tell them in fresh, innovative ways that make people think, ‘Oh, that was a different way of telling that story.’ At first, they might not always love it, but it’s a risk we should continue to take. We need to stay ahead of the competition and ensure the show remains relevant, fresh, and new.”

The Rovers Return will be at the centre of an upcoming storyline involving newcomer Ben Driscoll (Aaron McCusker), Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson), and Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine). The plot will take a darker turn as Tim comes to terms with being groomed at 14 by Trisha Pinkerton, who took his virginity when she was 20.

However, Kate reassured viewers: “Moments of the lads being daft and joking around the dartboard are just as important as the big storylines. There’s plenty more of that to come.”
