Coronation Street has revealed that Debbie Webster is Carl Webster’s biological mother, prompting fans to speculate about the identity of his father.
Coronation Street viewers believe they have worked out the identity of Carl Webster’s father following the revelation of his mother’s true identity.
It has now been confirmed that fan favourite Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) is actually Carl’s (Jonathan Howard) biological mother, rather than his sister as previously believed. The hotelier was long thought to be Carl’s half-sister, but the storyline was dramatically rewritten during Thursday’s episode (January 15) of the ITV soap.
Debbie and Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) are the children of Alison Webster, who died in 1980 and never appeared on screen, and the late Bill Webster (Peter Armitage).
In 1985, Bill went on to marry Elaine Prior (Judy Gridley), and the family relocated to Southport with Debbie. It is believed that during this time, Debbie gave birth to Carl at the age of 18, while Kevin remained in Weatherfield.
Debbie returned to Weatherfield in 2019, while Carl arrived towards the end of last year after spending most of his life living in Germany.
During the Corrie–Emmerdale crossover episode, Corriedale, a drunk Carl was driving with Debbie in the passenger seat when he crashed on a dark country road, resulting in the death of Weatherfield vicar Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank).
Viewers have grown increasingly frustrated with Carl, as he not only cruelly moved Debbie into the driver’s seat while she was unconscious, but has also allowed her to take the blame for the crash.
Debbie has since pleaded guilty to all charges, and in recent scenes she was seen looking through a memory box containing a baby hospital band, confirming that she is Carl’s mother.
Following the major Webster family revelation, Coronation Street fans have flocked to social media to speculate about the identity of Carl’s father, with some suggesting he could be a mystery man from Germany.
Posting on X, formerly known as Twitter, one viewer wrote: “Carl’s dad isn’t anyone from the street — Debbie left nearly two years before Carl was born. #Corrie”
Another fan added: “15/12/1986 — Carl’s dad could be a German guy. #Corrie”
A third fan commented: “Carl was born in Germany — that’s always been true. The German word for mother is Mutter and Mütter for mothers. For all we know, Carl’s biological dad could be a German guy. Debbie would have been 18 when she gave birth to Carl. #Corrie”
Viewers will now have to wait and see how long Debbie keeps the truth about her identity hidden from her secret son. In Friday’s episode (January 16), Debbie asked her new husband Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan) to look after Carl if she ends up going to prison over the crash — but she stopped short of revealing the real reason why.
