Coronation Street favourite looks completely different in 1990s Hollywood film – do you recognise them?

Posted on December 15, 2025

A beloved Coronation Street star has looked back on their role in a major 1998 Hollywood blockbuster alongside A-list names.

A Coronation Street favourite appeared almost unrecognisable in a 1990s Hollywood blockbuster, admitting he “had no idea just how big the film would become.”

Daniel Brocklebank first arrived on the cobbles in 2014 as Billy Mayhew and has since become a much-loved character. Over the years, he has been at the centre of several major storylines, ranging from murder plots to a harrowing battle with drug addiction.

Alongside these dramatic arcs, Billy has also experienced a number of high-profile romances, including relationships with Todd Grimshaw (played by Gareth Pierce) and his late husband Paul Foreman (Peter Ash). Billy was left heartbroken last year when Paul died after his fight with motor neurone disease (MND).

Earlier this year, viewers were shocked when it was confirmed that Daniel will be leaving Coronation Street, with a dramatic exit storyline still yet to play out.

On Sunday (December 13), Coronation Street’s Billy Mayhew actor Daniel Brocklebank appeared on Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh, where he spoke about his time on the soap and his upcoming exit. The conversation later turned to his role in the 1998 Oscar-winning film Shakespeare in Love, according to the Mirror.

A clip from the romantic period comedy was then shown, featuring a much younger Daniel acting alongside Gwyneth Paltrow.

The film went on to win seven Oscars, three BAFTAs and three Golden Globes, with Joseph Fiennes starring as William Shakespeare. Daniel also received a Screen Actors Guild Award for his role as Sam Gosse.

Back in the studio with Alan, Daniel looked back on his experience filming Shakespeare in Love, saying: “It was a wonderful film — the cast was incredible.”

He added: “I was just 18 when we made it, and at the time I don’t think I realised how big it was going to become or the impact it would have on my career. Looking back, it’s another moment I’m hugely proud of in my 32-year career so far.”

In other news, Daniel recently spoke about how he felt when he was told soap bosses planned to write his character out of the show. Talking to The Mirror, he explained: “They said it was purely a storyline decision, which is often the case.

“It felt like the right time, so I took it in my stride. At the end of the day, it’s a job, and no character is bigger than the show. Contracts only last a year, and I don’t think anyone realistically expects to stay forever — you’d be setting yourself up for disappointment.

“Programmes evolve, and new producers want to introduce fresh characters while writing others out when they feel their story has run its course. That’s just the nature of the business.”
