Coronation Street viewers expecting their midweek visit to the cobbles will be disappointed, as the soap won’t air tonight

It’s disappointing news for Coronation Street fans this evening, as their usual Wednesday night visit to Weatherfield has been cancelled.
The much-loved ITV soap, which recently celebrated its 65th anniversary, normally airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX. Earlier this week, viewers watched a powerful special episode focusing on the abuse Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) has been suffering at the hands of his partner Theo Silverton (James Cartwright).
However, tonight’s episode (Wednesday, December 17) has been removed from the schedule to make room for live coverage of the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
The football match between holders Newcastle United and Fulham will air on ITV1 from 7:30pm until 10:40pm, overlapping with Coronation Street’s usual 8pm slot.

The episode that would normally have aired on Wednesday was instead shown on Tuesday (December 16) due to the scheduling changes, meaning fans can catch up on ITVX if they missed it.
Coronation Street will return on Friday (December 19) with its usual hour-long instalment, airing from 8pm until around 9pm. The episode teaser reveals: “Will marks his 16th birthday in a hotel room with Megan, Sally clashes with Joanie over a diary mix-up, and Carl grows anxious that Abi may discover a damaging message from James.”

Reacting to the schedule disruption, fans took to a Coronation Street Facebook page to vent their frustration. One viewer complained: “Football again. It feels like ITV cares more about football fans than loyal Corrie viewers — especially those without a recorder.”
Another disgruntled fan wrote: “It really winds me up,” while a third echoed the sentiment, declaring: “ITV should just have a dedicated sports channel.” Someone else added: “Typical — football taking over again.”
It’s been an intense week on the cobbles, with the soap airing a special episode centred on Todd and Theo, highlighting the abuse Todd has been suffering at the hands of his boyfriend.

As the soap tackled domestic abuse within a same-sex relationship, the special episode was uniquely told through a range of recording devices, including Todd’s hidden camera, CCTV footage, dashcam clips, video doorbell recordings and police body-worn cameras.
Discussing being asked to direct the groundbreaking episode, Coronation Street director Matt Hilton said: “It felt like a really bold concept to present the story in such an intimate, voyeuristic way — something I’d never seen done before.
“As a fan of true crime, I could immediately see how it could work if handled correctly. The aim was to create something gripping for viewers, while also making them feel slightly uncomfortable as events unfolded.”
