Coronation Street producers reach unexpected decision over Ken Barlow’s future

Posted on January 19, 2026

EXCLUSIVE: Coronation Street chiefs have reached a decision about the future of fan favourite Ken Barlow, who has lived on the Cobbles since the soap’s very first episode 65 years ago.

Coronation Street bosses have spoken out about the future of fan favourite Ken Barlow — and revealed a surprisingly firm promise to viewers.

ITV producers have agreed that Ken will never be killed off, believing fans would be outraged if the iconic character, played by William Roache, were ever written out. While soaps often kill major characters to boost ratings, the team behind Corrie feel a different approach is right for Ken.

Executive producer Iain MacLeod explained to the Daily Star:
“William Roache has been part of the show since the very first episode. He has a role for as long as he wants it — without question. It would take a very brave producer to decide to axe him.”

“William is a remarkable individual. Whatever material he’s given, even now, he’s completely on point and knows every line. He’s the most professional member of the cast — and that’s something no one could argue with.”

In the past, Coronation Street producers have sparked uproar whenever the idea of killing off Ken has even been mentioned. Iain added:
“Years ago in meetings, one of the writers would cheekily suggest writing Ken out, and the room would erupt into debate. Eventually someone would say, ‘Forget it — let’s go to the pub.’

“It became a running joke — people would suggest getting rid of Ken just to bring meetings to an end so everyone could head out.”

William, who first appeared in Weatherfield at just 28 years old, holds the world record as the longest-serving television actor in a continuous role. Now 93, the soap legend remains hugely popular with viewers.

Over the years, Ken has been at the heart of countless major storylines — from a dramatic whodunnit to his many romances — proving that life on the Cobbles has never been short of drama for the iconic character.

Last year, William Roache spoke about his future on Coronation Street after adding another accolade to his remarkable career. In March, the television icon was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at The Entertainment Agents’ Awards (TEAA).

Reflecting on the recognition, he told the Champions Speakers Agency:
“It’s a tremendous honour to receive this award, and I’m very grateful.

“I’ve had a wonderful career, and spending so many years on such a special show like Coronation Street has been truly magical. I’ve been lucky to work alongside some incredible actors and create a lifetime of memories. I’m excited to continue on the programme for many more years.”
