Coronation Street welcomes Call the Midwife star for new Roy and Bernie twist change

Posted on January 20, 2026

Coronation Street’s Roy Cropper and Bernie Winter face explosive scenes next week

Coronation Street is set to introduce a new face next week, with a Call the Midwife star joining the cast.

Viewers will remember that Roy has recently formed a close connection with a woman named Alice. As part of a prison pen pal scheme, Roy began exchanging letters with her, learning that her son is currently behind bars.

In recent episodes, Roy was taken aback when he realised that one of Alice’s letters appeared to carry clear romantic undertones. In scenes airing next week, Roy is confronted about the correspondence.

Upcoming spoilers reveal that a man in his fifties arrives at the café and introduces himself as Mal, claiming to be Alice’s husband. A stunned Roy is left trying to explain the situation.

Meanwhile, after clashing with her husband Dev Alahan and venting her grief during an argument, Bernie Winter heads out for a heavy night of drinking with her friends.

Bernie downs several shots before declaring she’s heading home. However, she soon becomes distracted at the Chariot Square bar, where she orders another shot followed by a whisky.

It’s there that Alice’s husband, Mal, joins her at the bar. After introducing himself, he reveals that his wife has been having an affair.

As the night continues, Bernie opens up to Mal about the deaths of her son Paul and son-in-law Billy, reflecting on how deeply in love they were. When Ryan Connor steps in and says they’ve had enough to drink, asking them to leave, Mal makes a bold move by inviting Bernie back to his hotel room.

The following day, Bernie’s absence causes concern for Dev and the rest of the family — particularly as it’s her grandson Brody’s birthday and party.

Just as the family prepare to leave, a dishevelled Bernie finally arrives home. Later, outside No. 4, she confides in Gemma that she made a huge mistake the night before. But as Bernie turns around, she’s left horrified to see Mal approaching… leaving the big question — what happened, and what does he want now?

The role of newcomer Mal is being portrayed by actor Tim Treloar. He is widely recognised for voicing the Third Doctor in Big Finish Productions’ Doctor Who audio dramas, as well as for his role as Sergeant Major Tysoe in Bombshell.

Tim has also appeared in a number of films, including Maleficent, 100 Streets and Dolittle. His television credits are equally extensive, with roles in Call the Midwife, Casualty, Grace, Father Brown, The Bill, Silent Witness and Midsomer Murders.

Most recently, he featured in the BBC series Wolf in 2023, where he appeared across four episodes as the mysterious Walking Man.
