Coronation Street’s Debbie Webster star Sue Devaney previously spoke openly about not having children

Coronation Street’s Debbie Webster recently stunned viewers by revealing a secret about having a hidden child on the soap – but does actress Sue Devaney have children in real life?
Sue first appeared on the famous ITV cobbles in 1984, taking on the role of Debbie, introduced as Kevin’s sister, played by Michael Le Vell. She left the show a year later but made a much-celebrated return in 2019. Over the years, Debbie has become a firm fan favourite.
However, the past year has been an especially difficult one for the businesswoman, following her diagnosis with young-onset vascular dementia. Most recently, Debbie was caught up in the dramatic multi-vehicle crash in the Corrie episode, which tragically led to the death of Billy Mayhew, portrayed by Daniel Brocklebank.

The crash was first thought to be Debbie’s fault, but it later emerged that her brother Carl (Jonathan Howard) was actually responsible. After causing the accident, Carl moved an unconscious Debbie into the driver’s seat, deliberately framing her, according to the Mirror.
Last week, Debbie appeared in court charged over the multi-vehicle collision and pleaded guilty, leaving her family in shock. In a dramatic twist, it was revealed that Debbie is protecting Carl because she is secretly his biological mother and has chosen to take the blame for him.

Away from the drama of the soap, Sue enjoys a much quieter life. She is happily married to BBC journalist Jim O’Farrell, with the couple tying the knot in 2024, three years after getting engaged.
Sue and Jim said “I do” during an intimate ceremony in Skipton, North Yorkshire, surrounded by close friends and family. Sue later shared the happy news on Instagram, posting a photo of herself and Jim outside their hotel.

Sue does not have any children, something she previously spoke about during an interview with The Big Issue. She admitted that she never became a mother and feels that, now she is nearing 50, that chapter of her life has passed — largely because she was focused on her career at the time.
Reflecting further, she added that while many believe it’s possible to “have it all,” she doesn’t agree. Sue explained that she prefers to focus on one thing at a time rather than juggling multiple commitments. She also shared that she has a fulfilling life beyond acting, surrounded by her partner, sister, and niece.
