“Emmerdale viewers ‘devastated’ by Cain storyline in ‘episode of the year'”

Posted on February 5, 2026

Emmerdale fans have been left “completely broken” over a twist involving Cain Dingle, calling it the “best episode of the year.”
ITV soap viewers will recall that Cain (Jeff Hordley) was shot during last month’s Corriedale crossover. At the hospital afterward, he discovered that one of his tests had returned abnormal results, prompting doctors to plan further investigation with a biopsy.

Just hours after his wife, Moira (Natalie J Robb), was mistakenly arrested for the murders of Celia Daniels (Jaye Griffiths) and Anya Berisha (Alia Al-Shabibi), Cain visited the hospital to get his results.

In Wednesday’s (February 4) episode, now available on ITVX, consultant Ms. Rhodes (Lucy Lowe) delivered the devastating news: Cain has aggressive but localised prostate cancer. She recommended a radical prostatectomy and explained the possible side effects.

Shaken by the diagnosis and the idea of surgery, Cain quickly left the hospital and returned to the village, struggling to come to terms with the life-changing news.

Cain’s denial and anger soon led to tension with his loved ones, including his brother Sam (James Hooton) and granddaughter Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill). He also chose to ignore a call from Moira, who remains in custody.

Cain reached his breaking point at the Woolpack when his friend and local GP, Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson), asked whether he had received his test results. Later, he sat alone at his father Zak’s (Steve Halliwell) graveside, struggling to process the news of his illness.

Sarah eventually joined him, and Cain began to open up about his condition.

“I’m not well. After the crash, at the hospital, something showed up on my scans, and they wanted to run more tests. I told myself it was nothing, but I was wrong,” he confessed.

Sarah replied: “You don’t have to face this alone. How many times have you told me that? How many times did [Zak] say it? We’re family—this isn’t just about you. From now on, we face this together. You don’t have to keep it bottled up anymore.”

Cain then admitted tearfully, “I’ve got cancer. Were you scared? Because I know I am,” before embracing his granddaughter.

The episode struck a chord with ITV viewers, particularly as it aired on World Cancer Day. Many shared their emotional reactions on social media. One fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “I’m a mess… completely broken… tears and snot everywhere… this Cain and cancer storyline is destroying me.”

Another added: “Wow. No words. What an episode. Jeff Hordley was absolutely INCREDIBLE. I am sobbing. Such a real, raw, and honest portrayal of a cancer diagnosis.” A third commented: “Today’s #Emmerdale episode was heartbreaking. Jeff was phenomenal. Already crying, and it’s just the start of this storyline.”

On a Facebook fan page, someone declared: “Definitely the best episode of the year so far.”

Another viewer shared: “I’m a blubbering mess. People complain about silly soap storylines and all the doom and gloom, but if Cain’s diagnosis can save even one life, that’s a win.”
