“Fans stunned as Stephen Graham’s overlooked Coronation Street role comes to light”

Posted on February 16, 2026

“Stephen Graham is now one of the UK’s most adored actors, yet fans are shocked to learn he once appeared on Coronation Street.”

Stephen Graham has become one of Britain’s most celebrated actors, and it has recently come to light that he once appeared on the legendary cobbles of Coronation Street.

Since achieving stardom, Stephen has earned a reputation as a national treasure, thanks to standout performances in productions like This Is England, Boiling Point, Line of Duty, and A Thousand Blows.

His career has also taken him across the Atlantic, working with Martin Scorsese and sharing the screen with Hollywood heavyweights such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Al Pacino. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the arts, Stephen was awarded an OBE in the 2023 New Year Honours for services to drama.

Just last month, he added a Golden Globe to his accolades, winning Best Male Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television for his role in the Netflix hit Adolescence.

While Stephen’s career has skyrocketed in recent years, one of his first TV appearances came in the 1990 CITV show Children’s Ward. He later appeared in series such as The Bill, Heartbeat, and Where The Heart Is, according to the Mirror.

However, in 1999, Stephen joined the cast of Coronation Street, taking on the role of drug dealer Lee Sankey. From June to September, he appeared in the long-running ITV soap.

Stephen made his debut on the cobbles as Lee when Steven McDonald (Simon Gregson) recognized him from their time in prison. Their paths crossed when Steve was trying to sell his contraband tobacco in a pub and began supplying Lee regularly.

The scheme went awry when Steve’s father, Jim (Charles Lawson), discovered what was happening and threw Lee out of their home. A few weeks later, Lee lured Steve back with a proposal involving a trip to Amsterdam.

Although Jim feared Lee was turning his son into a drug courier, it turned out Steve had only smuggled a dog named Polly into Britain. Despite this, Lee eventually ended up back in prison for resuming his drug activities and hasn’t been seen in Weatherfield since.

Fans have been completely shocked to learn that Stephen appeared on Coronation Street all those years ago. On X, one viewer wrote: “Today I found out Stephen Graham was in Coronation Street and tried to pick a fight with big Jim ‘what about ye’ McDonald.”

Another asked: “Was that Stephen Graham in an old Coronation Street episode on ITV3?” A third added: “Just watched Classic Coronation Street and Stephen Graham is in it! 😂 So funny seeing him 22 years ago!”
