Emmerdale’s Cain Dingle received a shocking cancer diagnosis this week — but how old is the character?
ITV soap fans will recall that Cain (Jeff Hordley) was shot during last month’s Corrie crossover. While at the hospital, the Dales legend discovered something unusual in one of his tests, prompting doctors to order a biopsy for further investigation.
Cain returned to the hospital on Wednesday (February 4) to get his results. The doctor confirmed the devastating news: he has aggressive but localized prostate cancer. The consultant recommended a radical prostatectomy and outlined the possible side effects.
Initially, Cain struggled to process the diagnosis and lashed out at those around him. Eventually, he confided in his granddaughter, Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill), who has herself faced multiple cancer battles.
During Friday’s (February 6) episode, now available to stream on ITVX, Cain shared his diagnosis with his close friend and local GP, Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson).
Discussing his options, Liam reassured him: “Once you’ve had the surgery, people recover from this grade group and type of cancer all the time… The hardest part will be letting us support you.”
Later, Cain visited his wife, Moira (Natalie J. Robb), in prison, where she had been wrongly arrested for the murders of Celia Daniels (Jaye Griffiths) and Anya Berisha (Alia Al-Shabibi). Shocked to see Moira with a black eye, Cain chose not to reveal the full extent of his condition.
He admitted he had cancer but downplayed it, insisting it was “tiny” and wouldn’t require treatment. “They’re just going to monitor it, that’s all… Moira, it’s not serious, I promise,” he said, to which Moira replied: “Oh thank god, that’s a relief. It’s one less thing for us to worry about.”
Sarah later urged her grandad to be honest with Moira, saying, “Come on, you’ve seen me go through this. Cancer’s hardly something you can squeeze into a work break.” Cain, however, revealed that his main focus was getting Moira released from prison.
As Cain’s cancer storyline unfolds, fans may be curious about the character’s age. Cain was born on 30 November 1974, making him 51 years old, while actor Jeff Hordley is 55.
Emmerdale viewers have been left deeply emotional following Cain’s diagnosis.
