Coronation Street fans stunned after discovering why David Platt calls his mum Gail

Coronation Street viewers have been left shocked after learning the reason David Platt calls his mother by her first name, Gail. Gail, played by Helen Worth, and David, portrayed by Jack P. Shepherd, have shared a turbulent relationship over the years, marked by explosive rows and even a shocking moment when David pushed Gail down the stairs.
Last year, Gail said an emotional goodbye to the cobbles after an incredible 50 years on the show, with her exit airing on Christmas Day. After marrying Jesse Chadwick (John Thompson) for the seventh time, the newlyweds left Weatherfield behind to begin a new chapter in France.
Ahead of her departure, Gail shared touching farewell scenes with her children Nick (Ben Price), Sarah (Tina O’Brien), and David, as well as her mother Audrey (Sue Nicholls).

In the year since her departure, Gail has continued to keep in touch with her family. Just last month, David learned that he and his wife Shona (Julia Goulding) are expecting their first child together, making Gail a grandmother for the sixth time, according to the Mirror.
This Christmas Day, Gail is also set to make a brief return in the form of a video message sent to the Platt family to mark David’s birthday.
Longtime soap fans will recall that David has always referred to his mother by her first name, a habit that has frequently puzzled viewers. Social media users have speculated that the reason may stem from Gail once considering aborting David — something he later found out about.

One viewer suggested: “I think it dates back to when he found out that Gail had considered aborting him.” Another added: “He’s called her Gail for years — ever since he learned she tried to abort him. Now that’s disrespectful.”
Jack P. Shepherd, who plays David, has also previously addressed the issue. During a Q&A session on X, formerly Twitter, he was asked: “Why do you call your mum Gail?” Jack replied: “David calls Gail ‘Gail’ when he doesn’t respect her.”

Speaking previously about his role as part of the Platt family on the ITV soap, Jack said: *“There are a lot of us. When you look at the kids now, there are three — mine, Nick’s and Sarah’s replacements.
“I’ve got Lily from Sarah, Nick’s kind of got himself again in Sam, and Sarah’s got me in Harry. We all get along, we have a laugh, do a bit of work — just a little bit — and then we head home.”*
