“Line of Duty Named the Most Nail-Biting TV Moment of All Time – Full List Revealed”

Posted on January 21, 2026

“A recent survey has revealed the most thrilling TV moments ever, with Line of Duty’s ‘H’ interrogation outranking Stranger Things and Game of Thrones.”

As many as seven in ten Brits admit that they get most of their thrills from watching TV, with dramas (55%) and thrillers (43%) topping the nation’s favorite genres.

The poll revealed the 20 most pulse-pounding, edge-of-your-seat TV moments of all time. Highlights include the tense turret standoff between Fiona and Rachel in the current series of The Traitors (13%), alongside three other scenes from the same show.

Stranger Things also featured prominently, with the gripping graveyard battle between Vecna and Max in series four—where her friends save her from the Upside Down using Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill”—as well as the series finale showdown, where all storylines collide, claiming second and third place on the list.

Other standout moments include the intense kitchen confrontation between Sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) and her daughter’s killer, Tommy Lee Royce, during which he sets himself on fire, landing seventh, and the infamous Red Wedding in Game of Thrones, where Robb Stark is betrayed by Walder Frey, securing fourth place.

Classic British soap moments also made the cut, including Den serving Angie divorce papers on Christmas Day (watched by 30 million viewers in EastEnders, 1986), the iconic “Who Shot Phil?” storyline from 2001, and the devastating tram crash in Coronation Street.

Television expert Toby Earle, who helped with the research, explains why Brits are drawn to high-stakes TV moments that make their hearts race and adrenaline spike:

“When a show draws you in so deeply that you feel like you’re walking in the shoes of the hero or heroine, where a life-changing plot twist affects you as much as it does them, there’s no greater thrill you can get while sitting on your sofa.”

“Heart-racing TV places viewers right at the centre of the action, leaving us wondering what will happen next. That uncertainty provides a delicious, shocking thrill. Television has the power to transport us to new, unexpected places, and there’s nothing quite like a nail-biting storyline that shatters our expectations.

“Fans of The Traitors could hardly catch their breath when Harry met, then betrayed Mollie, in the series finale. This season’s icy showdown between Rachel and Fiona in the turret left audiences speechless. Now, it’s up to the creators of these gripping shows to bite their nails and see which moment has been voted the ultimate heart-racer.”

The drama clearly affects viewers both physically and emotionally. Nearly 19% of Britons admitted that simply watching the Round Table discussions raised their heart rate, while 37% said the Traitor vs Traitor confrontation this season made their pulse race the most. Unsurprisingly, 71% said The Traitors leaves them feeling more shaken than typical scripted dramas, and 63% confessed they struggle to relax after watching the programme.

The survey also found that 83% of viewers prefer shows that get their adrenaline pumping and leave them gasping for breath, while 45% said they need to make a cup of tea to recover after a tense episode. With research highlighting the physical stress that intense TV moments can trigger—from racing hearts to adrenaline surges—Asda Pharmacy is encouraging viewers to channel that tension into proactive heart health.

Faisal Tuddy, Asda Pharmacy’s Head of Pharmacy, said: “Shows like The Traitors are packed with heart-pounding moments that can really get your pulse racing, and they’re a fun reminder of the importance of looking after your heart. While a shocking twist might only raise your blood pressure briefly, high blood pressure often has no symptoms at all. That’s why we’re offering free blood pressure checks in all Asda pharmacies.”
