On Thursday, EastEnders’ Nigel Bates nearly drowned in the bath and was left fighting for his life

EastEnders’ Nigel Bates, played by Paul Bradley, is currently facing the challenges of dementia in a series of emotional storylines — but just how old is the character?
This week, viewers saw Nigel and his wife Julie (Karen Henthorn) renew their wedding vows in a heartfelt ceremony. Following the celebration, Julie decided they should move back in with Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), despite a recent disagreement between them.
Phil tried — unsuccessfully — to tell Julie that Nigel had secured a place in a care home. However, his attention was soon diverted when he discovered that it was Mark Fowler (Stephen Aaron-Sipple) who had revealed Phil’s secret plan to take Nigel to Portugal.
While Phil and Mark argued heatedly in the kitchen, Nigel was left unattended in the bath on Wednesday (February 4), resulting in a near-drowning incident.
In Thursday’s episode (February 5), now available to stream on BBC iPlayer, Phil realised Nigel had been left alone and rushed upstairs to find him unconscious in the bath, according to OK!.

Phil and Mark quickly pulled Nigel from the bath, with Phil performing chest compressions while Mark called for an ambulance.
At the hospital, a doctor confirmed that Nigel was in a “stable” condition but recommended keeping him overnight to ensure all the water had been cleared from his lungs.
“He’s sleeping now. He was panicking, so we gave him a sedative… We need to make sure all the water has left his lungs and that there’s no risk of aspiration pneumonitis,” the consultant explained.
“When water enters the lungs, it can cause inflammation and fluid build-up. This is particularly dangerous after a near-fatal drowning, and Nigel is especially vulnerable to infections due to his dementia… Mrs Bates, your husband very nearly died, so this is the safest place for him right now.”
Later, Julie was furious when Phil admitted he had withheld information about Nigel’s care home placement. However, they eventually reconciled, with Julie agreeing to secure the care home spot before it was too late — marking a touching and pivotal moment in Nigel’s emotional storyline.

As Nigel’s health continues to deteriorate, soap fans may be wondering about the character’s actual age. Born on 25 May 1958, Nigel is currently 67, while actor Paul Bradley is 70.
After seeing Nigel’s latest struggles on screen, many fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their heartbreak over the character’s worsening condition.
“One viewer wrote: ‘Nigel’s story is absolutely heartbreaking. Paul, Steve, and Karen are phenomenal. I was in tears by the end of today’s episode,’” while another added: “This storyline is just so devastating.”
A third fan admitted: “Omg I nearly cried last night when Nigel went under in his bath. I thought it was the end. Thank the LORD Phil realised and came to his aid!” Another remarked: “The scenes with Nigel, Julie, and Phil are always brilliantly done. This storyline has been so heartbreaking to watch.”
One more fan highlighted the realism of the plot: “For anyone caring for someone with advancing dementia, the Nigel/Phil/Julie storyline is hard to watch. The pressure, guilt, and struggle to do the right thing are portrayed perfectly. Dementia is such a cruel disease.”
