Theo star from Coronation Street opens up about heartbreaking deaths away from the cameras

Posted on January 27, 2026

James Cartwright from Coronation Street described it as “very sad” while speaking about losing three family members.

Coronation Street’s James Cartwright has spoken out about a deeply upsetting loss he recently experienced.

James joined the ITV soap this year as Theo Silverton, the new love interest of Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce), and sparks quickly flew between the two.

However, Theo’s darker side soon emerged, as he has been manipulating and emotionally abusing Todd for months, trying to control every aspect of his life.

The situation took a darker turn this month when Theo left Todd’s best friend and former partner, Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank), to die following a vehicle pile-up during the Corriedale episode.

In Tuesday’s episode (January 27), wracked with guilt and emotion, Theo spoke to Billy’s coffin, expressing his deep regret for leaving him to die.

Unbeknownst to Theo, Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) was listening from the adjoining room, only realizing it when he heard a door slam. A flustered Theo rushed outside to investigate, but couldn’t figure out who had been there.

Although landing a role on Coronation Street last year was a major career milestone for James, he described 2025 as a “mixed old year.” The actor was left devastated following the deaths of both his dogs and a close family member.

“It was very sad. Grief is the price we pay for love. You spend so much time together, and the pure, uncomplicated love of a dog is irreplaceable,” he told the Mirror.

James added: “So, while work has been amazing with this role, it’s also been a bit of a rollercoaster year. Then again, life is a magical journey, isn’t it? You can enjoy the most beautiful sunsets, but sometimes you also have to dig yourself out of a thick bush with just a teaspoon.”

Last year, James spoke candidly about losing three cherished family members and revealed how he was coping with grief over the Christmas period. He told Metro: “Very sadly, this year we lost both our dogs.”

He added: “And last year, we lost my grandad, who was my best friend, just before Christmas. The house is going to feel very empty, so to make up for it, we’re going out for Christmas dinner for the first time ever.”
