Posted on January 13, 2026

Michelle Ryan, who portrays Zoe Slater on EastEnders, paid tribute with an emotional selfie following the news that Derek Martin, a cherished soap favourite, had died aged 92.

EastEnders star Michelle Ryan has led the tributes following the death of soap legend Derek Martin, sharing an emotional selfie in honour of her on-screen dad and grandad.

The actress, who played Zoe Slater on the BBC soap, was among the first to respond to the heartbreaking news after Derek — who portrayed cabbie Charlie Slater — passed away over the weekend.

Alongside a makeup-free selfie, she wrote: “So sad to hear the news that Derek Martin has passed away. He was such a friendly man, always ready with a story and practical advice, like how weak tea is good for shock. RIP Derek. Condolences to his friends and family.”

Fans quickly flooded the post with heartfelt messages, remembering both the actor and the beloved character he brought to life. One commented: “Charlie was such a kind and lovely character, and I can imagine Derek was just as wonderful. Sending love, Michelle.”

A third fan wrote: “I only know him as Charlie, but I imagine he was a wonderful man, a kind person, and a talented actor. Sorry for your loss x.”

Others shared their sadness as well. One commented: “It’s always sad to hear we’ve lost another actor who played a role in our lives growing up. God blessed him with many years. RIP.” Another added: “Sad to hear this. Rest in peace, Derek. Hope you have a good week, Michelle!”

Derek Martin passed away in hospital on Saturday night, January 10, at the age of 92. His death was confirmed in a Facebook post by a family friend, which read: “It is with deepest regret that we announce the passing of Derek Martin / Derek Rapp, aged 92. At 7pm this evening, Derek sadly passed away in hospital about an hour ago. My mum and his son David were with him the whole time.”

The message continued: “Derek was truly an incredible person, highly talented in the film industry and beyond. A great man, father of two sons, and a wonderful family friend. We will miss you, Derek. RIP.”

Tributes also poured in from the entertainment world. Ian Richards, from the Grand Order of Water Rats charity, wrote: “So very sad to hear of the passing of PKR Derek Martin, ‘king of the eggs’ — if you know, you know.” He added: “A genuinely warm and funny man whose company always had me in stitches. His enormous charity work often went unreported, but it was never overlooked by those who knew him well. RIP Derek — the world is a sadder place without you.”

Ian Henry also shared: “It was a joy to be around him. He had so many stories and was incredibly funny. He accomplished so much in his long and distinguished career, not least his iconic role as Charlie Slater on EastEnders for so many years. His presence will be deeply missed.”

Steve Hewlett also paid tribute, writing: “Derek Martin will be truly missed. He made my visits to the Water Rats magical and hilarious. RIP, sir.”

Derek played Charlie Slater for 15 years, becoming one of Walford’s most beloved faces as the father of Kat, Lynne, Little Mo, and Belinda. His character was written out in a dramatic storyline, dying of a heart attack during a heated argument with Kat.

Outside of Albert Square, Derek appeared in shows such as Doctor Who, Only Fools and Horses, The Bill, and Law & Order, as well as in several films.

Reflecting on his career, he once said: “I had always been a big film fan for as long as I can remember… that was my start.” He later added: “However, I am best known for the many years I played Charlie Slater in the long-running soap EastEnders.”

Now, fans and former co-stars alike are mourning the loss of a true soap legend.
