Coronation Street’s Hayley Cropper actress moves from co-star’s husband role to starring in hit ITV dramas

Posted on January 22, 2026

Coronation Street honoured the much-loved character Hayley Cropper in Tuesday’s episode.

Coronation Street delivered a heartfelt nod to the past on Tuesday evening with a moving tribute to the beloved Hayley Cropper.

In touching scenes at the café, Roy Cropper told Lisa Swain that it was the anniversary of Hayley’s death and that he planned to visit the boating lake where he had scattered her ashes.

Feeling reflective, Roy also encouraged Carla Connor to make amends with Lisa, saying Hayley would want her to be happy. Meanwhile, as Roy corresponded with potential love interest and pen pal Alice, Carla reminded him that Hayley would want him to find happiness as well.

Fans will recall that Hayley, played by Julie Hesmondhalgh, was Roy’s treasured partner. David Neilson’s character first tied the knot with Hayley by deed poll in 1999 before they made it official in 2010.

Tragically, Hayley passed away on 20 January 2014 after taking her own life following a devastating pancreatic cancer diagnosis.

The couple remain one of the ITV soap’s most beloved pairings, having supported many residents over the years, including Fiz Dobbs and Becky McDonald.

Since leaving Coronation Street in 2014, Julie, 55, has gone on to appear in a range of major productions on both ITV and the BBC.

In 2016, she appeared in the acclaimed police thriller Happy Valley as Amanda Wadsworth, acting alongside Sarah Lancashire, James Norton, and Siobhan Finneran.

The following year, Julie featured in ITV’s crime drama Broadchurch, playing Trish Winterman opposite David Tennant, Olivia Colman, and Jodie Whittaker.

In 2018, she took on the role of Judy Maddox in Doctor Who, followed by Heather in The A Word in 2020, and Nancy in The Pact in 2021. Most recently, last year, Julie appeared as Suzanne Sercombe in the critically praised Mr Bates vs The Post Office.

Outside of her acting career, Julie is married to actor and writer Ian Kershaw; the couple tied the knot in 2005. Over the years, Ian has appeared in five different roles on Coronation Street and in 2018 joined the show’s writing team, contributing to 89 episodes, including the recent intense Theo Silverton and Todd Grimshaw special.

He has also written for Beyond Paradise, Death in Paradise, Cold Feet, and EastEnders.
