Emmerdale legend shares heartbreaking confession as she speaks out about “tragic circumstances”

Posted on December 30, 2025

An Emmerdale favourite has shared a heartbreaking admission as she spoke openly about “tragic circumstances.”

The 49-year-old actress, who plays Ruby Miligan on the ITV soap, took to Instagram on Tuesday, December 30, to reflect on her Christmas.

Beth posted a clip of herself and her partner, former Dales star Ian Kelsey, taking part in their annual cold-water swim along the Brighton seafront.

“This was (part of) our Christmas. When in Brighton… we go in every year. It’s a tradition,” she wrote.

Addressing a previous tragedy, Beth added: “But we didn’t go in very far this year because it was rough. I also didn’t want to share this at the time due to the truly tragic circumstances in which some people lost their lives while swimming in Devon on Christmas Day.”

“It’s heartbreaking how quickly joy and fun can turn into tragedy, and my thoughts are with the families and friends affected. Life is so precious,” Beth wrote.

She continued: “To anyone who found Christmas tough this year, for whatever reason, it’s completely normal. I hope you managed okay. And for anyone panicking about ‘WHATDOIDOFORNEWYEAR????’… we still haven’t decided either. January is almost here, and we can all take a breath. Lots of love, Beth.”

Fans quickly flooded the comments with messages of support. One wrote: “Ooh, well done! It must have been freezing! Happy New Year to you both!”

Another added: “I bet it was freezing, but it looks like fun. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas.” A third commented: “You’re so brave to go into that freezing sea. Happy New Year to you both.”

A fourth fan echoed the sentiment: “Hope you both had a lovely Christmas and enjoy a wonderful New Year. All the best for 2026.”

It’s been an eventful year in the Dales for Beth’s character, Ruby, who killed her abusive father, Anthony Fox (Nicholas Day), back in January.

Killer John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) helped dispose of the body in a secret location, which was only revealed after the army medic’s own crimes came to light.

Following the discovery of Nate Robinson’s (Jurell Carter) body in the lake in June, Ruby went to the police station in secret and confessed to killing her father, mistakenly believing his remains had been found.

Ruby was eventually cleared of all charges, and the character has experienced far less drama in recent months. After a brief break from the village a few weeks ago, Ruby launched a new business venture following an accidental over-import of wine from overseas.
